Westpac Banking Outage: Thousands of Customers Affected (2026)

Imagine the frustration: you're at the checkout, ready to pay, and poof – your bank is down. Thousands of Westpac customers across Australia experienced this exact scenario recently, unable to access their funds due to a widespread banking outage. This disruption impacted everything from simple EFTPOS transactions to online banking, including mobile apps and web browsers.

Westpac, acknowledging the issue, released a statement confirming that "some customers are experiencing intermittent issues accessing banking services." They assured the public that they were working diligently to restore services and apologized for the inconvenience.

Customers, naturally, took to social media to vent their frustrations.

One woman shared her ordeal: "I was just stuck at the servo. I couldn’t pay via POS, can’t access app, had to go through browser, but then it wouldn’t let me confirm security via SMS or phone as I was trying to Pay ID the attendant, so that didn’t work. I tried an ATM, that didn’t work either.”

Another St George Bank customer reported being advised at a branch to "quickly use the ATM before it goes down."

And this is the part most people miss: some customers received in-app notifications stating that mobile banking was unavailable.

According to DownDetector, the outage reports peaked at approximately 1,000 at 1:24 PM on Wednesday.

This incident raises some important questions: How reliant have we become on digital banking? What safeguards are in place to protect us during these outages? Do you think banks are doing enough to prepare for and handle these situations? Share your thoughts below!
