Tired of lugging around extra gear just to chat with your friends while gaming on your Switch 2? Well, you might be in luck! Forget about buying a separate webcam because your Pixel phone could be the solution you've been waiting for.
Before we dive in, let's rewind a bit. When the Switch 2 first launched, its compatibility with webcams was, let's just say, a bit of a gamble. While the console doesn't have a built-in camera, a webcam is essential to fully enjoy the GameChat feature, which lets you livestream your face during multiplayer matches.
Initially, using your Pixel as a webcam for the Switch 2 was a no-go, even with Google's USB webcam mode introduced in Android 14. Players had to resort to using additional USB-C to HDMI adapters and capture cables.
But here's where it gets interesting... Now, you can connect your Pixel directly to the Switch 2 using a single cable. During testing, connecting a Pixel 9 Pro directly to the Switch 2's top USB-C port, switching the USB preferences to “Webcam” mode, allowed the smartphone to be used as the camera for GameChat.
Imagine playing multiplayer games like Mario Kart World, not only speaking with competitors worldwide but also seeing their faces superimposed over a livestream of their gameplay!
And this is the part most people miss... It's unclear whether this newfound compatibility is due to recent updates from Google, Nintendo, or a combination of both. The Pixel 9 Pro used in the test was running the Android 16 December release. This is a welcome upgrade, especially for those who travel frequently with their Switch 2 and prefer to keep their setup streamlined.
