Unveiling Ancient Secrets: The Evolution of New Zealand's Birds
The discovery of a rare fossil goose in an ancient Central Otago lake has revolutionized our understanding of New Zealand's bird history. A University of Otago researcher, Associate Professor Nic Rawlence, reveals that the evolutionary journey of Aotearoa's birds is far more dynamic than previously imagined.
In a groundbreaking paper published in Historical Biology, an international team led by Otago, Te Papa, and Cambridge University analyzed fossils from St Bathans. Among the findings, a small, undescribed goose species emerged, named Meterchen luti, paying homage to the nursery rhyme Old Mother Goose. This ancient goose, rising from the mud of the fossil deposit, is not a direct ancestor of the recently extinct giant flightless New Zealand geese or their Australian counterpart.
The research challenges earlier theories, suggesting that the ancestors of some large New Zealand birds arrived surprisingly recently, within the past four to five million years. This includes species like takahē, Forbes' harrier, and the giant Haast's eagle. The study's lead author, Alan Tennyson, highlights a conflicting earlier theory that proposed the St Bathans goose as the direct ancestor of the giant flightless Cnemiornis geese, implying a lineage spanning over 14 million years in Zealandia.
However, genetic evidence supports a more recent arrival theory, indicating that the ancestors of Cnemiornis arrived from Australia around seven million years ago. This reassessment provides crucial insights into the dynamic geological, climatic, and human history of Zealandia, shaping the evolution of Aotearoa's fauna.
