The Three Mile Island revival plan faces an uphill battle, according to a former top Trump energy official. In a recent opinion piece, Neil Chatterjee, who served on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) from 2017 to 2021, expressed skepticism about the feasibility of restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. The plant, which shut down in 2019 after a partial meltdown in 1979, has been a controversial topic in the energy sector. Chatterjee acknowledges the push for clean energy, especially with companies like Microsoft seeking new ways to power their data centers. However, he highlights the numerous challenges that make the revival of Three Mile Island an extremely difficult endeavor. The former FERC official points out the regulatory hurdles, including environmental red tape, which can halt even the most well-intentioned projects. Nuclear projects have a history of budget overruns and delays, and the process of restarting a permanently shut-down reactor involves extensive regulatory reviews and special exemptions. Chatterjee emphasizes that the Three Mile Island reactor vessel may be brittle and fatigued, requiring refurbishing of critical components. The project's estimated cost of $1.6 billion doesn't account for the high maintenance expenses that led to the closure of similar plants. He also mentions the supply chain for nuclear fuel, grid integration, workforce hiring and training, and overcoming the cultural stigma associated with the partial meltdown. Chatterjee acknowledges the importance of nuclear energy in the energy puzzle, but he suggests that resources should be directed towards more promising initiatives, such as advanced nuclear technologies, which offer lower meltdown risks, higher efficiency, and minimal waste. He concludes by expressing his concern that Three Mile Island may not be able to meet the energy demands of a Microsoft data center due to the numerous challenges it faces.
