Tai Tuivasa's Incredible 30kg Weight Loss Journey | UFC Heavyweight's Comeback (2026)

Get ready for an explosive comeback! Tai Tuivasa, the beloved Australian heavyweight, is set to reignite one of the UFC's most iconic post-fight traditions in Sydney this weekend. But here's where it gets controversial: Tuivasa's journey back to the octagon is marked by an incredible physical transformation and a renewed focus on dominating the heavyweight division.

Tuivasa, known for his wild celebrations and powerful strikes, has vowed to bring back the infamous "shoey" if he emerges victorious at UFC 325. This event marks his long-awaited return after a 14-month hiatus, during which he experienced the toughest period of his career.

"I think it's time," Tuivasa told Fox Sports Australia, referring to his comeback and the motivation behind it. He faces a pivotal bout against Brazilian powerhouse Tallison Teixeira, aiming to end a five-fight losing streak that threatened his future in the UFC.

At 32 years old, Tuivasa reflects on the necessity of his extended break. "I had a really good break," he said. "But this is my passion, my livelihood, and I think I needed to remind myself of that. I missed the thrill of competition."

During his time away, Tuivasa's weight ballooned to over 150kg, and shedding those extra kilograms proved to be the toughest challenge of his comeback. "I dropped a significant amount," he admitted. "Around 30 kilograms. It's not easy for someone of my heritage to lose weight, but I was determined."

His transformation has impressed longtime friend Dan Hooker, who described Tuivasa as looking almost unrecognizable compared to the beer-drinking social media posts from late last year. "He's looking sharp, like a million bucks," Hooker said. "He's even eating healthy now - blueberries and eggs! Who is this guy, and where's the real Tuivasa?"

Tuivasa's fight against Teixeira is more about proving himself against the world's toughest opponents than just winning. Before his recent skid, Tuivasa was on a five-bout winning streak, highlighted by a brutal knockout of Derrick Lewis in 2022, which earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. It was during this winning streak that his shoey celebrations turned him into a cult hero in the UFC.

"I feel like the heavyweight division is a mess right now," Tuivasa said. "A few more wins will put me back at the top with the best of them. I've got a few good years left in me at heavyweight, but I don't want to be fighting into my 50s."

Teixeira, the tallest fighter on the UFC roster at 6-foot-7 with an 83-inch reach, certainly presents a formidable challenge. However, Tuivasa, who has knocked out 7-foot Stefan Struve in the past, isn't overly concerned about the size difference. "He's a skilled fighter, but I've faced bigger and stronger opponents. Closing the distance and not giving them room to maneuver is key. And, of course, landing powerful strikes."

Tuivasa has also taken notice of the rising star of fellow heavyweight Waldo Costa-Acosta, acknowledging the momentum the contender has built. Last weekend at UFC 324, Costa-Acosta continued his impressive streak with a stoppage of Derrick Lewis.

"He's very good, and I like his style. He's definitely a potential future opponent for me. But first, I've got to focus on this weekend's fight. I want to get back on a winning streak, and I plan to make my presence felt this year."

When asked about the possibility of his fight with Teixeira going the distance, Tuivasa shook his head. "I don't want it to, but I'm prepared if it does. I've heard about the new bonuses, and I intend to go after them."

Get ready for an action-packed weekend as Tuivasa aims to make his mark once again in the UFC's heavyweight division. Will he bring back the shoey celebration? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: Tuivasa is back, and he's ready to cause some chaos.
