A new controversy has emerged, this time involving the activewear brand Sweaty Betty and its advertising slogans. The brand finds itself in a dispute with a period underwear company, Nixi Body, over alleged copied taglines.
Kelly Newton, co-founder of Nixi Body, expressed her concerns about Sweaty Betty's use of similar slogans, stating that it felt like the brand was 'taking from' other female founders. She highlighted the taglines 'Keeping you moving through menstruation, motherhood and menopause' and 'No leaks. No ifs. Just butts.' which Nixi Body has used for years.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sweaty Betty acknowledges the similarity but argues that these phrases are commonly used by many brands and influencers. They claim to be reviewing their marketing campaigns, but maintain that their intentions are to empower women through fitness, a common goal for many activewear brands.
The situation took an interesting turn when personal trainer Georgina Cox revealed that Sweaty Betty had offered her a settlement over another disputed slogan, 'Wear The Damn Shorts'. This revelation prompted Newton to speak out, as she felt it was important to address the issue, especially since she wasn't the only one affected.
Newton emphasized that she wasn't seeking compensation but accountability from Sweaty Betty. She believes that the brand's actions go against the very idea of empowering all women, as they seem to be borrowing from other female-led businesses.
Sweaty Betty, in their statement, clarified that they never intended to take credit for others' creativity, especially from trailblazing women. They reached out to Nixi Body directly to convey this and are conducting a review of all their campaigns and marketing language to understand the origins of their phrases better.
So, what do you think? Is this a case of innocent coincidence or a deliberate attempt to capitalize on the hard work of others? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
