The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is thrilled to announce a significant transition in its leadership. Effective January 1, 2026, Michael (Mike) McGovern, the esteemed Chair of the International PolioPlus Committee at Rotary International, will take on the crucial role of Polio Oversight Board (POB) Chair. This marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight against polio, as McGovern brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for polio eradication to the forefront.
This transition comes after five years of dedicated service by Dr. Chris Elias, President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation. Elias's leadership has been instrumental in advancing the global fight against polio, and his contributions have been invaluable. During his tenure as POB Chair, remarkable progress was made, including the successful closure of an imported wild poliovirus outbreak in Malawi and Mozambique, and the distribution of 2 billion doses of the novel oral polio vaccine type 2, which has significantly contributed to stopping outbreaks of type 2 variant poliovirus.
McGovern's appointment is a testament to his extensive experience and unwavering dedication to the cause. He has been at the forefront of Rotary International's efforts since 1985, when the organization launched its global initiative to eradicate polio. Rotarians worldwide have played a pivotal role in this endeavor, and McGovern's leadership will undoubtedly accelerate the progress towards a polio-free world.
