Pep Guardiola's Furious Reaction to VAR Decision | Man City vs Newcastle | Carabao Cup (2026)

Pep Guardiola's frustration with VAR boils over after a controversial match. The Manchester City manager didn't hold back after a recent game, and his post-match comments have sparked debate.

City secured a significant advantage in the Carabao Cup semi-final, winning 2-0 against Newcastle United at St James' Park. This victory puts them in a strong position to reach the final.

However, despite the positive result, Guardiola was visibly annoyed by a VAR decision. A goal by Antoine Semenyo was disallowed after a lengthy review, lasting nearly six minutes.

Guardiola's frustration stemmed from what he perceived as inconsistent VAR application. He pointed to a previous incident in a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle, where a penalty wasn't awarded to Phil Foden despite a late challenge from Fabian Schär. The Key Match Incidents Panel later acknowledged this as a mistake.

"I would like to know why VAR in the Premier League game at Newcastle when we lost 2-1, it was an insane penalty on Schar for Phil Foden and not even a consideration," Guardiola stated. He also highlighted the differing VAR decisions in the same match.

But here's where it gets controversial... Guardiola also brought up a separate incident from the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace in May. He referenced a situation where goalkeeper Dean Henderson appeared to handle the ball outside the penalty area, an action that could have warranted a red card.

"I didn't say anything in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace when it was a red card after 30 minutes for Henderson," he said. "Did I say anything? No. It's OK. It's fine."

Guardiola's comments suggest a pattern of perceived unfairness. He also mentioned that he has remained silent in the past despite unfavorable outcomes in important matches.

The second leg of the semi-final is scheduled for February 4 at the Etihad Stadium. The winner will face either Chelsea or Arsenal in the final.

What do you think? Do you agree with Guardiola's assessment of the VAR decisions? Is there a need for more consistency in VAR implementation? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
