In a thrilling announcement that is sure to excite fans of Canadian music, comedian Mae Martin has been named the host for the upcoming 55th annual Juno Awards. This news was shared by event organizers on Thursday morning. Mae Martin, who previously hosted the Canadian Screen Awards in 2024 and gained popularity with their hit show, 'Wayward,' which debuted on Netflix late last year, will take the stage as the first solo comedian host since Russell Peters held the role back in 2009.
Reflecting on their journey, Martin recalled visiting Toronto at the tender age of 13 to participate in a radio show, expressing how nervous they felt at the time. Now, at 38, they feel "slightly less nervous" and are looking forward to bringing a lively and energetic atmosphere to the Juno stage. "I hope the audience gets a little raucous," Martin commented, emphasizing their goal to create a fun and relaxed environment reminiscent of a live music concert.
The ceremony is set to occur in Hamilton on March 29, just two years after Martin received their first nomination for Comedy Album of the Year. Their selection as host marks a shift from recent years, where the Junos featured a lineup of repeat hosts, including Michael Bublé, who hosted last year for the third time, Nelly Furtado in 2024 for her second go, and actor Simu Liu, who hosted consecutively.
Martin's hosting role comes at a pivotal moment for Canadian arts and culture. With an increasing focus on celebrating distinct Canadian artistic contributions, primarily influenced by tensions stemming from a Canada-U.S. trade war, the Junos have become a platform for asserting national pride. The 2025 awards showcased this sentiment, featuring Anne Murray donning a Canadian hockey jersey, declaring Canada her "safe haven," while rapper bbno$ passionately criticized U.S. officials.
When reflecting on the state of Canadian pop culture, Martin highlighted a sense of optimism. They noted the significant success of their own series and expressed pride in the growth of Canadian content. "I think the worse things get around us, the more we rally together and realize that we actually do have a really distinct cultural identity," Martin remarked, emphasizing the resilience and creativity of Canadian artists in challenging times.
As for this year's awards, there will be some exciting category adjustments. For the first time, the Latin Music Recording of the Year will be awarded, and updates to the eligibility criteria for rap categories have been instituted to ensure that only Canadian citizens or permanent residents can be nominated. This move aims to promote local talent and bolster the vibrant hip-hop community in Canada.
The 55th annual Juno Awards are set to take place at the recently renovated TD Coliseum in Hamilton and will be broadcast live on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, and streamed on CBC Music's YouTube channel starting at 8 p.m. ET.
