Lindsey Vonn: Defying Age and Gravity to Dominate the Slopes
Lindsey Vonn, at the age of 41, is proving that age is just a number. She clinched her second World Cup downhill victory of the Olympic season, a testament to her incredible skill and determination. This comeback story is even more remarkable considering her right knee has been rebuilt with titanium implants.
In a thrilling race held in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, Vonn showcased her dominance, finishing 0.37 seconds ahead of Kajsa Vickhoff Lie. Her teammate, Jacqueline Wiles, secured third place, adding to the U.S. team's success. The race was intense, with Vonn clocking speeds of up to 81 mph on a shortened course, completing it in under 67 seconds.
"I knew what it was going to take to win today," Vonn stated, highlighting the demanding nature of the race. Her victory is a powerful display of her commitment and the risks she's willing to take.
This win extends Vonn's record as the oldest race winner in the World Cup circuit's 60-season history. It was her 84th career win and her record-extending 45th in downhill. After the race, she shared a family video call with her coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, the men's downhill champion from the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
Vonn, the Olympic downhill champion from the 2010 Vancouver Games, is poised to be a strong contender for the next gold medal race at the Milan Cortina Olympics, scheduled for February 8th. The race will be held at Cortina d'Ampezzo, a slope where Vonn has consistently excelled.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sofia Goggia, the 2018 Olympic champion, finished 17th, and defending Olympic champion Corinne Suter made her season debut after injuries, finishing more than a second behind Vonn. The U.S. team had a strong showing, with five racers in the top 20.
The race faced a brief delay when Austrian prospect Magdalena Egger was airlifted after a crash. Egger was the runner-up in Vonn's season-opening downhill win last month in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
With this victory, Vonn has extended her lead in the World Cup downhill standings. She now leads by 129 points over Emma Aicher of Germany, after earning 100 race points. She's aiming for her ninth World Cup downhill season title, a decade after her eighth, which she also won in Zauchensee.
"I felt like I was skiing better in super-G this summer," she said, "but when I got to the races in St Moritz, everything was working really well right from the start." On Sunday, Vonn was set to compete in a super-G race.
