In the world of football, every opportunity can lead to significant transformations. Recently, Jason Garrett shared insights from his intriguing experience interviewing for the head coaching position with the Tennessee Titans.
During his tenure as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2010 to 2019, Garrett developed a strong understanding of what it takes to lead a team. Last month, he was one of the candidates considered for the Titans’ head coaching role, and he took some time at Super Bowl LX to reflect on that process.
"I had an absolutely great experience," Garrett expressed, now serving as an analyst with NBC. He elaborated on his discussions with General Manager Mike Borgonzi, Assistant GM Dave Ziegler, and the coaching staff, highlighting that their conversation lasted around six to seven hours. "We just talked football and shared our visions for the team. There are plenty of positive developments happening in Tennessee. While their record last season wasn't impressive and they've faced challenges over the years, there's a lot to look forward to. They have a promising young quarterback, and Jeffery Simmons stands out as one of the top defensive players in the NFL. Additionally, they possess significant salary cap space and appear to have the right leadership in place. It was truly an exciting opportunity for me."
Ultimately, the Titans opted for Robert Saleh, who previously served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and has experience as the head coach of the New York Jets.
Garrett's accomplishments as a coach are noteworthy; he led the Cowboys to three division titles and received the Associated Press Coach of the Year award in 2016, finishing his Dallas career with an 85-67 regular-season record. Among the 15 candidates interviewed for the Titans position, Garrett was part of the eight who met with the team in person.
He shared his belief that the Titans have essential components in place for future success. "I think they'll do a great job down there," he stated confidently. "I really respect Mike Borgonzi and the leadership he brings to the program. Robert has shown great capability as a coordinator in the NFL and deserves this chance. I believe he will assemble a solid team around him, including established coaches like Brian Daboll and Gus Bradley. It’s a young and talented team, and I trust they’ll make wise personnel choices. There’s so much to be optimistic about for the future in Tennessee."
Another reason Garrett viewed the Titans as an attractive opportunity is the immense potential of quarterback Cam Ward. "I really like Cam a lot," he remarked. "He’s incredibly talented, and as we all know, he was the first pick in the draft. His athleticism and arm strength are impressive. Everyone I've spoken to who knows him since high school speaks highly of his character. He has a passion for football, a strong work ethic, and embodies everything you want in a player. The key now is surrounding him with a capable supporting cast, and I believe they’re on the right path to achieve that."
