Tomas Hertl Shines with Career-Best 5 Points as Golden Knights Overpower Sharks
In a thrilling match, Tomas Hertl achieved a personal best by contributing five points — comprising two goals and three assists — leading the Vegas Golden Knights to a decisive 7-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Sunday.
"It's hard to explain. Sometimes you feel like you should do even better and end up with just an assist or something minimal," Hertl remarked, reflecting on his exceptional performance. "Other times, everything seems to click, and it just works out. I’m genuinely pleased with how I played today."
Jack Eichel made significant contributions as well, netting two goals. Pavel Dorofeyev added one goal along with two assists, and Mark Stone showcased his playmaking skills by recording three assists. The Golden Knights, now boasting a record of 21 wins, 11 losses, and 12 overtime losses, celebrated their fourth consecutive victory, having also triumphed over the St. Louis Blues with a score of 4-2 in their previous game. Goalkeeper Carl Lindbom stopped 18 shots to secure the win.
Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy expressed pride in the team's recent performances, stating, "We've been stringing together some victories, and I think the players have come to realize that as we approach the second half of the season, our current standing isn't satisfactory. Graf quickly responded to tie the game at 1-1 around two minutes later. Zach Whitecloud attempted to clear the puck from the left circle, but it landed directly on Graf's stick, allowing him to score by shooting through the five-hole following a deflection off Noah Hanifin.
"We managed to get it deep and create a turnover," stated Sharks forward Michael Misa, who was playing in his first NHL game since November 1. "Graf was in the right place at the right time, and he executed beautifully."
Dorofeyev restored the Golden Knights’ lead with a power-play goal at 10:57, receiving a swift touch pass from Hertl at the top of the crease before firing a shot into the roof of the net near the right post. Eichel then extended the lead to 3-1 at 4:19 of the second period, finding the short side beneath Askarov's glove after Stone caused a turnover along the right boards.
Hertl continued to shine, pushing the score to 4-1 with another power-play goal at 11:00. Following Dorofeyev’s shot from the right circle, which struck Timothy Liljegren before losing sight of the puck, Hertl swept the loose puck into the open net.
"Power plays play a crucial role in our success," Cassidy noted. "Winning face-offs and capitalizing on opportunities is vital. I imagine Hertl enjoys returning to play here; he likely has fond memories from past seasons. Familiar surroundings can inspire a player to elevate their game."
Whitecloud further widened the margin to 5-1 with a powerful one-timer from the right point that beat Askarov through traffic at 12:25.
Wennberg managed to narrow the gap to 5-2 at 16:29 when Liljegren gloved down a puck in the left circle and slid a pass to him for a well-placed one-timer from the right side. "We definitely had our share of chances," commented Wennberg. "When those opportunities arise, especially in a game like this, it's critical to convert them into goals that can shift momentum."
Shea Theodore capped off the scoring by shooting the puck from his own zone into an empty net, increasing the lead to 6-2 at 17:03 of the third period. Finally, Hertl sealed his standout night with a one-timer from the right circle, concluding the game at 7-2 with just over a minute remaining.
"I thought we played an incredibly solid game overall," Lindbom reflected. "Both offensively and defensively, and our power play was firing on all cylinders. It was a really good performance."
