Golf Majors Rescheduled in 2028 Due to Olympics Clash! (2026)

Get ready, golf fans, because the 2028 season is about to get a major shake-up! The Olympics are coming to town, and the ripple effects are causing a reshuffling of the major championship schedule. The R&A, the governing body behind the British Open, has announced some significant date changes to accommodate the Olympic golf tournaments.

The British Open, the ISPS Senior Open, and the AIG Women’s Open will all be played later in the year. Specifically, the British Open will tee off from August 3-6, followed by the ISPS Senior Open from August 10-13, and the AIG Women’s Open from August 17-20. This shift is a direct result of the Olympic golf competitions, which are slated for July 19-29 at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. The Olympic events will feature a men’s individual tournament, a two-day mixed-team event, and finally, the women’s individual event.

"We've worked closely with everyone involved to find new dates for our major championships in 2028 to make room for the Olympic golf," explained Mark Darbon, the CEO of the R&A. "We're grateful for the discussions we've had with all the key players, and we think that announcing these dates now will help everyone plan the global golf calendar for 2028." He also confirmed that The Open will return to its usual mid-July dates in 2029.

But here's where it gets interesting... The venues for the 2028 championships are still undecided. This means there's a lot of anticipation around where these prestigious tournaments will be held. For those eager to plan ahead, the 2026 Open will be at Royal Birkdale (July 16-19), and the Old Course at St. Andrews will host in 2027.

And this is the part most people miss... The Olympics' influence extends beyond just the dates. It highlights the growing international appeal of golf and the sport's continued evolution.

What do you think about these changes? Will the later dates impact the tournaments' atmosphere or player performance? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
