Imagine a project so ambitious it’s being hailed as the largest aviation infrastructure endeavor in Africa’s history. That’s exactly what’s unfolding in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, where Zaha Hadid Architects has broken ground on a transformative airport that promises to redefine global connectivity. Named Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), this colossal terminal is strategically located 40 kilometers south of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Its goal? To serve as a central gateway connecting every corner of the continent to the world. According to Cristiano Ceccato de Sabata, Zaha Hadid Architects’ director of aviation, “Bishoftu International Airport is a visionary project not just for Ethiopia, but for Africa as a whole. Airports have the power to unite people and transcend borders, and we’re honored to contribute to this mission.”
The first phase of BIA is set to open in 2030, operated by Ethiopian Airlines. This initial stage will feature a 660,000-square-metre terminal and two runways capable of handling 60 million passengers annually. But this is just the beginning. Once fully completed with four runways and parking for 270 aircraft, the airport is projected to serve a staggering 110 million passengers—a figure that dwarfs Ethiopia’s current main airport, which is nearing its capacity limits.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali emphasized the project’s scale, stating, “Bishoftu International Airport will be more than four times the capacity of our existing airport, ensuring we meet the growing demands of air travel in the region.” And this is the part most people miss: the airport’s modular structure, crafted from locally sourced concrete and steel, is designed not just for grandeur but also for sustainability.
Connected to Addis Ababa via high-speed rail, BIA will offer seamless travel experiences. Inside, each pier will boast unique designs and color palettes inspired by Ethiopia’s diverse regions, blending cultural richness with modern functionality. The terminal’s layout is modeled after the Great Rift Valley, a central spine that optimizes passenger flow while minimizing transfer distances. With 80% of passengers expected to transit without leaving the airport, BIA will include extensive amenities like an airside hotel, dining options, and outdoor spaces landscaped with native plants.
Here’s where it gets even more intriguing: Zaha Hadid Architects aims for BIA to achieve LEED Gold certification, incorporating eco-friendly features like natural ventilation, solar shading, and photovoltaic arrays.
