A shocking incident has led to the suspension of the highly anticipated 2026 Bathurst 12 Hour race, leaving fans and competitors alike in disbelief. The race, known for its intense action and thrilling moments, took a dark turn when a horrific crash unfolded over the mountain, sending shockwaves through the entire event.
It all began with a simple spin by Johannes Zelger's #79 TSUNAMI RT Porsche at Forrest's Elbow. What followed was a chain of events that no one could have predicted. Race leader Ralf Aron, caught off guard, collided with the Porsche at nearly full speed, resulting in an immediate suspension of the race.
But here's where it gets controversial... The incident can be traced back to McPhillamy Park, where photos reveal Zelger's Porsche making contact with the wall. The damaged vehicle then slowly made its way down the mountain, causing a pile-up behind it. Damien Hamilton and Kai Allen found themselves in a tricky situation, with Allen having no choice but to clip the back of the Porsche, leaving it perpendicular on the racing line.
Allen shared his recollection of the incident: "I was trying to navigate around, going slow, and he suddenly braked. It was a weird and unfortunate situation."
This collision occurred during a restart lap after James Golding's heavy crash, with the backmarker group of cars ahead of the leaders. Ralf Aron, who had an issue with pit-to-car communications during the previous Safety Car period, was the first to arrive at the scene, unaware of the impending danger around the blind corner.
Aron's #77 Mercedes collided with the Porsche at full racing speed, resulting in a burst of flames from the front of his car. Luca Stolz and Maro Engel, driving their own Mercedes, narrowly avoided the fiery crash.
This is the part most people miss... It's the first time since 2018 that a red flag interruption has occurred at the 12 Hour race, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Both Aron and Zelger managed to exit their vehicles, with Aron being taken to Orange Hospital for further evaluation. He is currently in a stable condition.
The suspension of the race has left many questioning the safety protocols and the impact of such incidents on the sport. What are your thoughts on this controversial crash?
